Princeton Security nears profitability

Princeton Security Technologies Inc, the Nevada-based holding company of Princeton Gamma-Tech Instruments Inc (Princeton, NJ), a developer of X-ray and Gamma-ray detectors and spectroscopy systems for homeland security applications, reported second quarter 2010 sales of $455,000, and increase of 11%, narrowing its net loss to $93,000. This, and an order backlog of over $1 million, gives the company the believe that it has turned a corner.

Princeton’s technology goes back to the early 1970ies, when it produced the first commercial HPGe (high purity Germanium) planar detector. It was founded by management and scientific staff as independent company in February 2005, after its then owner, mining giant Outokumpu, was looking to divest its detector and microanalysis business. Princeton sold its microanalysis business to Bruker Biosciences in November 2005 to concentrate on the detector business sector within the homeland security industry, which promised to be more profitable. Now, five years after the buy-out, Princeton offers a portfolio of 10 products, including the SAM Defender, and portable isotope identification and radiation monitoring instruments, and the MCA2500R QCC linear digital multi-channel analyser and spectroscopic area monitor.

Merck races ahead on profits

Merck KGaA (Darmstadt, Germany) reported a revenues growth of 16% for the second quarter of calendar 2010 to €2.21 billion ($2.83 billion at €0.78 = $1), with net profits going up 69% to €183.4 million compared to the same period in 2009. In the same period, the Performance & Life Science Chemicals (PLSC) division, incorporating Merck’s stake in the separation markets with columns for high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), in addition to laboratory buffers and reagents, increased its sales by 21% to €360 million, more than doubling its operating result to €47 million.

For the first six months of 2010 the whole group increased its net profits by 127% to €374.8 million on revenues of €4.31 billion, which grew only 14% over the same period in 2009. PLSC grew its revenues by 17% to €706 million, while its operating results went up 142% to €102 million. Excluding revenues from Millipore, which has been integrated in July this years (see pg 2), Merck management expects PLSC to increase its 2010 revenues by 15% over 2009 (€1.20 billion), while its operating result should double from €97 million in 2009.

Merck employed just over 34,000 staff at the end of the first six month, up by almost 1,000 since the beginning of the year.

Merck Millipore launched after merger

As a result of the acquisition of Millipore Inc (Billerica, MA) by Merck KGaA (Darmstadt, Germany), Millipore CEO, MARTIN MADAUS will leave the company, while JON DIVINCENZO, the former president of Millipore’s Bioscience division, will lead the equivalent unit in the newly-created Merck Millipore division. He will be joined by KLAUS BISCHOFF, former president of Merck’s Performance & Life Science Chemicals division, who takes up the leadership of Lab Solutions, and JEAN-PAUL MANGOLLE, the president of Millipore Bioprocess division, who will head the Process Solutions business. PETER KERSHAW, vp of Global Operations at Millipore, will the head of Operations at Merck Millipore.
