Super March – Pittcon and Analytica: competition or co-existence?

The analytical instrument industry is approaching ‘Super March’.  In four months’ time, the two biggest exhibition and conference events in the industry will take place within four weeks of each other. The Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy, or Pittcon, now in its 61st year, will open its doors from the 28th of February to the 5th of March in Orlando, FL, while Analytica 2010 will return for the 22nd time to Munich, Germany, between the 23rd and the 26th of March.

Helicos sequences genome on single system

Helicos Biosciences Corp (Cambridge, MA), a developer of third-generation sequencing technology, has accomplished the first “single-molecule sequencing of an individual human genome‚” using a single system of the Heliscope. A letter published in Nature Biotechnology on the 10th August describes the method and also revealed that the DNA used was that of Dr Stephen Quake, the technical founder of the company.

Organisers postpone UK’s only major show

In a decision that strikes a blow to the image of the UK as a viable location for an analytical instrument and laboratory equipment exhibition, the UK’s only major instrumentation trade show has been postponed by two years. LAB UK 2009, the European Trade Fair and Conference for Analysis, Bio and Laboratory Equipment in the UK, was planned to take place at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham, England in late October.
