Merck races ahead on profits

Merck KGaA (Darmstadt, Germany) reported a revenues growth of 16% for the second quarter of calendar 2010 to €2.21 billion ($2.83 billion at €0.78 = $1), with net profits going up 69% to €183.4 million compared to the same period in 2009. In the same period, the Performance & Life Science Chemicals (PLSC) division, incorporating Merck’s stake in the separation markets with columns for high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), in addition to laboratory buffers and reagents, increased its sales by 21% to €360 million, more than doubling its operating result to €47 million.

For the first six months of 2010 the whole group increased its net profits by 127% to €374.8 million on revenues of €4.31 billion, which grew only 14% over the same period in 2009. PLSC grew its revenues by 17% to €706 million, while its operating results went up 142% to €102 million. Excluding revenues from Millipore, which has been integrated in July this years (see pg 2), Merck management expects PLSC to increase its 2010 revenues by 15% over 2009 (€1.20 billion), while its operating result should double from €97 million in 2009.

Merck employed just over 34,000 staff at the end of the first six month, up by almost 1,000 since the beginning of the year.
